Round 34 - Saturday, March 10th vs Bonbeach - 1pm

The Wolves come up against Bonbeach currently sitting 3rd on the ladder next Saturday to round out the season. After a 13 to 10 season the Wolves are licking their wounds a little but are determined to go out with a bang and give Bonbeach a tough contest next week.

The last game for the season is next Saturday's game at Bonbeach starting at 1:00pm.

Team Selection not available yet.

Round 33 - Sunday, March 4th vs Chelsea

It was a strange feeling to be at the club before 10am on a Sunday morning and not watching juniors but such was the case on Sunday when the VBA agreed to move the club's Division 2 game from 3:30pm to 10am so the Williamstown Seconds could play their Prelimanary Final at home at 1pm.

Firsts

Wolves 2 v 5 Chelsea

If ever a game started brilliantly and then went bad this was it. The opening innings saw 1 run scored off some great hitting at the top of the order followed by another run on the back of an error that saw Chris Mason run the diamond instead of being out at third base.

Daniel Chircop started on the mound for the first time this season and was doing a great job. Through 6.2 innings Daniel had stuck out 10 batters and had a strike to ball ratio above 70% in a dominating display on the mound. It all turned upside down with 2 out when Daniel gave up a walk and a base on a wild pitch. This was followed by a couple of big hits and an error which saw 3 runs scored in the blink of an eye. Aaron Green relieved on the mound to take the last out of the 7th inning.

Williamstown expected to bat it's way out of trouble but although it got batters in running positions in all 3 remainging innings they were unable to add to the score. On top of this Chelsea rode home their great defensive play with more hits taking out the game 5 to 2.

It's fair to say the Wolves were very disappointed with the performance and are looking forward to redeeming themselves in the foinal game of the season next week against Bonbeach

Preliminary Final - Williamstown Vs Newport

Seconds

Wolves 5 v 17 Newport

After an unlucky loss to Sandringham away last week in the 1st Semi Final going down 7-8 in the 10th innings expectations were high going in against local rival Newport at home in front of a large contingent of supporters, A win putting the club into a Grand Final.

The game started according to plan with young Braxton Conroy doing a great job starting on the mound. Newport found Braxton hard to hit and could only manage 2 runs from the 5 innings he pitched. Braxton, still only 16, was relived purely on pitch count. At that stage Willy was still firmly on control leading 5 runs to 2.

It's hard to explain what happened next except to say everything that could go wrong did. Errors were being made in the field and any hits seemed to find Newport players standing under them. Whatever it was Newport came out and started scoring runs - lots of them. In the 6th and 7th inning Newport scored 15 runs to 0 to take a 17 to 5 lead and ending the scheduled 9 inning game, and the Wolve's season early.

It would be unfair to judge the team on this disappointing performance. In fact the Seconds had a great year with a 14 to 4 winning record second only to Sandringham. The year saw many highlights including:

A dominating season with the bat for team Manager Greg Wray

The emergence of another pitching option at the club in Daniel Chircop with 12 wins for the season

Jacob Stirrat having a very consistant year with the bat and behind the plate

Mike Hurinui continuing his blistering speed around the diamond, and

Braxton Conroy continuing to develop as a pitcher and at 2nd base.

As much as anything the seconds placed pressure on the Firsts to keep their spots which is very healthy at a competitive club.
